Amazon Leadership Principles — Explained
Jeff Bezos is best known for Amazon.
During his initial days, he has put together a masterpiece on leadership principles(LP).
These 14 LPs will change the way you discuss ideas for new projects or decide on the best approach to solving a problem.
Breakdown of each one: 👇
LP #1: Customer Obsession
Amazon strives to be:
• Earth’s most customer-centric company
• Leaders are obsessed with customers.
Customer-first. Start with the customer and their needs.
LP #2: Ownership
Leaders are owners. They never say ‘that’s not my job’
• You’re responsible for your work
• More importantly, you own when things go wrong.
When going gets tough, the tough get going.
LP #3: Invent and Simplify
Leaders need to innovate and simplify.
• “We have never done this”
• “It’s too complex”
• “I don’t know how to solve it “
Never stop innovating.
LP #4: Are Right, A Lot
A leader should be completely open to being wrong.
By “are right, a lot” they mean:
Have good judgement or instinct.
LP #5: Learn and Be Curious
This is the most important and underrated LP of all.
What separates leaders who succeed from people who don’t:
• They fundamentally are “be curious” in their lives.
Don’t wait. Ask. Start now.
LP #6: Hire and Develop the Best
Hiring is a science, not art. It’s not judgement, but fact-based.
Hire the best, by “bar raiser”.
Who? A skilled evaluator outside the recruiting panel makes the final judgment on applicants.
LP #7: Insist on the Highest Standards
Aim for the best.
But leaders know that there will be mistakes.
Ensure problems “stay” fixed.
LP #8: Think Big
This can mean a lot of things.
• Scale of the solution
• Timeline of the solution
• Look at the big picture
• What others are doing
“Think big” is a must for leaders.
LP #9: Bias for Action
Moving slowly > Sitting idle
Build fast. Fail first. Move one.
Speed trumps perfection.
LP #10: Frugality
The leader believes — constraints help grow innovation.
• No need for extra resources.
• Innovative idea to make multiple threads to work.
The risk of failure is higher, as people get frustrated quickly.
I am not much aligned on this.
LP #11: Earn Trust
As a leader, build trust. Constantly.
• Be honest.
• be up-front.
• Your word is everything.
They benchmark themselves and their teams against the best.
LP #12: Dive Deep
Leaders operate at all levels. They should
• Know what to do
• Know how to do
• Know pro(s) & con(s)
No task is beneath them.
LP #13: Have Backbone; Disagree and Commit
Disagree on the facts, but once aligned, be ready to commit (even in opposite direction).
Leaders are obligated to respectfully challenge decisions when they disagree.
Speak up. Challenge but commit wholly.
LP #14: Deliver Results
Leaders need to deliver. On-time with quality.
Deliver results, that’s key.
But make sure you’re part of those defining what a “result” is.
Take charge and control expectations.
